The Interactive Open Online Course for motivated youth willing to address challenging issues with action. 

‘Countering Hate Speech’ is the Interactive Open Online Course where participants learn about and discuss current challenges posed by hate speech in their communities and societies at large. Not only do participants engage in dialogue about the topic and get access to expert video lectures, they also collaboratively work towards creating a campaign to counter hate speech in various forms. This makes ‘Countering Hate Speech’  an action-oriented course where participants are inspired, share knowledge and learn from each other.

Weekly time investment
-> 1-2 hours: preparation and assignments -> 2 hours: online group sessions

Participants in this course will get the opportunity to review expert content developed by European Alternatives, with the support of the Foundation Remembrance Responsibility Future (EVZ) and the Mott Foundation. In addition, they are encouraged to putting their own experiences, values and perspectives on the forefront while engaging with peers through Virtual Exchange.

Participants will gain an understanding of what hate speech is (and what it is not); the various forms it can take; its causes and consequences; how it is regulated and what place it takes in our societies. In addition, this course aims to inspire and activate participants by addressing concrete examples, tactics and strategies of how to respond to hate speech.

After successful completion of this course, participants are awarded an Erasmus+ Virtual Exchange Badge.

Participants

This course is open and free of charge to anyone between 18- 30 years old who is a national of or resident in one of the Erasmus+ Virtual Exchange Project countries.

The application deadline for prospective students is 13 May 2019.

Interactive Open Online Courses provide youth with the opportunity to learn both with and from their peers across cultural contexts and national boundaries in facilitated online meetings alongside relevant skill-building activities and dynamic content provided by expert academics and practitioners. Video lecture comment

Video lecture comments should be 1-2 paragraphs in length. Your response shouldn’t be a summary, but instead should demonstrate you grappling with the concepts, questions, and implications in the lecture. Feel free to include questions of your own that you would like to discuss further with your group.

Final project proposal

Choose an idea and submit a proposal for your awareness campaign to counter hate speech. Your proposal will cover the following questions;

  • Case/form of Hate Speech: Which case of hate speech is the campaign addressing and why? 
  • Message: What is the key message of your action?
  • Audience: Who is the target audience? 
  • Format: what format will you to spread your message? You can choose from:
    1. Presentation, website, blog or other written material
    2. Video, cartoon (powtoon), animation
    3. Infographic, digital poster, meme
    4. Social media campaign
