This lecture series is presented by academics and practitioners and complemented by views of the public. Prior to your online group meeting each week, participants are expected to watch the week’s videos and then respond to at least one lecture with a comment, observation or question.  SUBMIT HERE >>>

A weekly breakdown of topics

 

Week 1 – Setting the Scene
In the first week, you will be introduced to the concept of hate speech and how it is defined by various European human rights organizations such as the ‘Council of Europe’ or the ‘European Commission against Racism’. Additionally, you will take a look at the various forms of hate speech and how hate speech is being packed for a wider public using mixed-media channels.

 

Week 2 – Impact and Consequences of Hate Speech
What comes to your mind when you hear the term ‘hate speech’? Racism, discrimination, freedom of expression, political debate, identity, hate crime; these were the first that came to our mind. This week explores the place of hate speech in our current societies and how it intertwines with narratives of various crimes.

 

Week 3 – Human Rights Perspective on Hate Speech
In this week, we will explore what human rights are and how to apply a human rights perspective to cases of hate speech. How can the human rights framework help in understanding policy and regulations countering hate speech? And how can these perspectives be helpful to individuals in fighting against hate?

 

Week 4 – Countering Hate Speech or Censoring Freedom of Expression?
Regulating hate speech is often seen as a controversial issue by the advocates of freedom of speech. Policy, law, interventions and calling against hate speech can be used as censoring tool by advocates of authoritarianism. Is it possible to draw a line between the limits of both?

 

Week 5 – Countering Hate Speech: The Importance of Civil Society
We can conclude that hate speech manifest in many different ways and parts of our social life. So, what now? In this week, we explore strategies and tactics to respond and propose alternatives to hate speech. These will be grounded in a human rights framework and we will look at examples coming from various fields.

Gender In/equality in Media and Journalism 2019

Learn and exchange about the gender-media relationship  

In the Interactive Open Online Course ‘Gender In/equality in Media and Journalism’,  participants will engage with learning resources and expert content developed by Advancing Gender Equality in Media Industries (AGEMI) while exchanging on different aspects of the gender-media relationship. Through Virtual Exchange, students and young media professionals will put their own experiences, values, and challenges in the forefront as a primary source for learning and application about gender in/equality in the media.

Sustainable Food Systems 2019

This 5 week Interactive Open Online Course gives participants the chance to learn about the challenges and opportunities of the agricultural sector in the Mediterranean. It is guided by leading experts through a self-paced course.  In addition, participants will engage in intercultural dialogue during live online group sessions where they get the chance to share their ideas, experiences and reflections with others with different cultural backgrounds.

Social Circles

Social Circles offers young people from Europe and the Southern Mediterranean the opportunity to have a short but meaningful Erasmus+ Virtual Exchange experience. Through online facilitated dialogue, participants will engage in constructive communication with peers from different cultures and countries over a specific topic of their mutual interest.

Countering Hate Speech 2019

The Interactive Open Online Course for motivated youth willing to address challenging issues with action. 

‘Countering Hate Speech’ is the Interactive Open Online Course where participants learn about and discuss current challenges posed by hate speech in their communities and societies at large. Not only do participants engage in dialogue about the topic and get access to expert video lectures, they also collaboratively work towards creating a campaign to counter hate speech in various forms. This makes ‘Countering Hate Speech’  an action-oriented course where participants are inspired, share knowledge and learn from each other. 

Technology and Society 2019

Connections Across Frontiers

‘Technology and Society’ is the first original Erasmus+ Virtual Exchange Interactive open Online Course held in Arabic.  Students and youth from the Southern Mediterranean and Europe will explore the role that technology plays in our everyday lives and our societies. Participants will learn from, and with, their peers in an interactive, intercultural, online environment and reflect on the societal changes that come with technological developments.
