Sustainable Food Systems
Sustainable Food Systems |A Mediterranean Perspective 2020 is a 5 week Interactive Open Online Course giving participants the chance to learn about the challenges and opportunities of the agricultural sector in the Mediterranean. It is guided by leading experts through a self-paced course. In addition, participants will engage in intercultural dialogue during live online group sessions where they get the chance to share their ideas, experiences and reflections with others with different cultural backgrounds.
Countering Hate Speech 2020
The Interactive Open Online Course for motivated youth willing to address challenging issues with action.
‘Countering Hate Speech’ is the Interactive Open Online Course where participants learn about and discuss current challenges posed by hate speech in their communities and societies at large. Not only do participants engage in dialogue about the topic and get access to expert video lectures, they also collaboratively work towards creating a campaign to counter hate speech in various forms. This makes ‘Countering Hate Speech’ an action-oriented course where participants are inspired, share knowledge and learn from each other.

Connections Across Frontiers
Technology has never been as influential as it is today; impacting our personal lives as well as the societies we live in. In the course ‘Technology and Society’ participants get the chance to share their perspectives on the challenges and opportunities technological developments pose with youth from other countries and diverse backgrounds. Stimulated by thought-provoking materials they come together weekly in online facilitated group sessions and discuss the effects of technology on social relations, the job market, future innovations and more.
Cultural Encounters 2020
Perspectives on Populism
A new wave of anti-establishment politics and populist voices are gaining power around the world. Their often nationalist agendas claim to represent the will of the people and many feel a connection to this form of politics. Yet, what is the impact of this development on issues concerning migration, policies about borders or minority rights? Does it influence our sense of belonging, or the way we relate to each other in our increasing super-diverse societies? And does it affect processes of exclusion and our views of the ‘other’? Explore all of this and more, together with students from other countries and diverse cultural backgrounds.
Stimulated by video lectures from expert academics and practitioners, participants exchange ideas and perspectives as well as engage in an interactive assignment that brings the online experience to the offline reality.
Gender In/equality in Media and Journalism 2020
Learn and exchange about the gender-media relationship
In the Interactive Open Online Course ‘Gender In/equality in Media and Journalism’, participants will engage with learning resources and expert content developed by Advancing Gender Equality in Media Industries (AGEMI) while exchanging on different aspects of the gender-media relationship. Through Virtual Exchange, students and young media professionals will put their own experiences, values, and challenges in the forefront as a primary source for learning about gender in/equality in the media.
‘Gender In/Equality in Media and Journalism’ provides an innovative intercultural learning experience for those ready to address one of the pressing challenges of the modern media industries and beyond.

A weekly breakdown of topics
Week 1 – Setting the Scene
In the first week, you will be introduced to the concept of hate speech and how it is defined by various European human rights organizations such as the ‘Council of Europe’ or the ‘European Commission against Racism’. Additionally, you will take a look at the various forms of hate speech and how hate speech is being packed for a wider public using mixed-media channels.
Week 2 – Impact and Consequences of Hate Speech
What comes to your mind when you hear the term ‘hate speech’? Racism, discrimination, freedom of expression, political debate, identity, hate crime; these were the first that came to our mind. This week explores the place of hate speech in our current societies and how it intertwines with narratives of various crimes.
Week 3 – Human Rights Perspective on Hate Speech
In this week, we will explore what human rights are and how to apply a human rights perspective to cases of hate speech. How can the human rights framework help in understanding policy and regulations countering hate speech? And how can these perspectives be helpful to individuals in fighting against hate?
Week 4 – Countering Hate Speech or Censoring Freedom of Expression?
Regulating hate speech is often seen as a controversial issue by the advocates of freedom of speech. Policy, law, interventions and calling against hate speech can be used as censoring tool by advocates of authoritarianism. Is it possible to draw a line between the limits of both?
Week 5 – Countering Hate Speech: The Importance of Civil Society
We can conclude that hate speech manifest in many different ways and parts of our social life. So, what now? In this week, we explore strategies and tactics to respond and propose alternatives to hate speech. These will be grounded in a human rights framework and we will look at examples coming from various fields.
